After retirement, Don Uteck and his family returned to Saskatchewan and took up residence in Lafleche; a small town in the south central area of the province. As a hobby, Don always enjoyed working with wood, especially creating furniture and toys. Don had previously done some woodturning and decided to further pursue it. After purchasing a used lathe and tools, Don got some wood and the rest, as they say, is history.

Completely self-taught, Don utilized books, videos and ideas from the internet to catapult his ideas into the work he now creates. Having tried all forms of turning, Don’s focus is mainly on Segmented Turning; which is his true passion. As the skill level increased, so did the need for better equipment and tools, which in turn increased the quality of work produced, as evidenced by the beautiful pieces of art he creates.

Some pieces, such as bowls, boxes, and vases are turned from solid wood—much of which are local trees saved from landfills. Many of his vases and bowls that have been made with Saskatchewan woods had been purchased by the former Premier of Saskatchewan, Brad Wall, to be given as special gifts to dignitaries from around the world.
