This painting probably took a total of over 50 photos to create the composition of the layout and to get the detail required in order to tell Allison’s story about Shade.\u00a0 \u00a0It was endearing to hear how Shade had such an impact on Allison and her family and friends – especially Allison’s two nieces.\u00a0 It was important to not only place Shade in such a prominent position in the painting but to place her in one of her favourite spots on a beach in Vancouver.<\/p>\n
Allison then ordered giclees and pillows for her family and friends that were a huge part of Shade’s life so that they would continue to treasure their memories of their time with “The Big Black Dog<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Customer Inquiry for this commission:<\/p>\n “Great – I’m so happy that you’re willing to consider the project :).\u00a0 So, this is a bit of the background.\u00a0 My beloved dog Shade passed last October at the lovely age of 14.\u00a0 I took over care of Shade when she was 11 from a friend who had developed an allergy.\u00a0 She became family right away and my whole family loved her.\u00a0 As I was in residency and fellowship when I had Shade, I was fortunate to have a bit of “dog share” arrangement with my best friends.\u00a0 And while we lived in Vancouver, our friend group all regularly “shared” her.\u00a0 She was a major part of our lives. Anyways, she was just the best dog for all of us.\u00a0 We always referred to her as ‘the big black dog’ – she was a cross between a Golden Retriever and a chocolate Lab – so go figure how she came out black.\u00a0 She was the most mellow dog and a great companion.\u00a0 She loved the water – the little lake in our local park, the ocean, her kiddie pool in the back yard – whatever was available.\u00a0 She was also extremely patient and bribable with treats – qualities I put to good use posing her for an annual calendar.\u00a0 Unfortunately, her age caught up with her and it was time to let her go.\u00a0 She was just such a huge part of my life and a bit of a symbol of that particular time in my life – finishing residency, moving away to fellowship, and forming bonds with friends that will be my friends for life.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n My thought for the painting is to have Shade as the focus, near or in the water, with my friends and I kind of in the background – not with detail so we’re necessarily recognizable if that makes sense. I’ve attached some photos for reference.
