In the 40\u2019s and 50\u2019s, jam can curling was one of winter\u2019s outdoor sports that young and old enjoyed out on homemade rinks or dugouts.\u00a0 Empty cans were filled with sand and water and left out to freeze. Sometimes an old spoon was placed in the middle to serve as a handle.\u00a0 The skips broom served as the target.<\/p>\n

Jam Can Curling<\/strong><\/h5>\n

\u201cJam Can Curling\u201d was the young people\u2019s way of being like the grownups.\u00a0 They played out on a homemade outside rink or dugout.\u00a0 Empty cans were filled with sand and water and left outside to freeze.\u00a0 An old spoon was sometimes placed to freeze in the middle, with its bowl part sticking out.\u00a0 This served as a handle.\u00a0 When they played the game, there was no target other than the skip\u2019s broom.\u00a0 Many a dispute arose over whose jam can was closest.<\/p>\n
