“No Girls Allowed” by Yvette Moore
It’s summertime and school is out. The two boys finally have the tree house built and are ready for their hideaway adventures but before they can claim it as their own, the signage needs to go up. It’s very clear that no one is allowed and it is very obvious that girls are not – especially their sisters.

“Over Horizon” by Yvette Moore
Along Highway 13, heading towards Moose Jaw, the road passes what was once the thriving community of Horizon, Saskatchewan. In 2011, its population stood at five people—classifying it as a Ghost Town. The community may have gone but not its standing monuments that reminisce of what once was.
There exists two elevators and a small church. The Federal Elevator was constructed in 1922 and was in use until 1996 when the rail line was abandoned. A group of local farmers have purchased the line as part of the Red Coat Road and Rail Line Ltd. The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Elevator was constructed in 1953 and is still in use. Both elevators were purchased by the Horizon Ag Co-op and are both designated Heritage Properties. The small church was constructed in 1928 as St. Cunegunda Roman Catholic Church and has also been designated a Heritage Property.
Today, the church has become the Horizon Community Church Centre. Though time has moved people on, the past remains present in its standing memories.

“A Kettle Full” by Yvette Moore
The paint is slowly wearing away, exposing a lovely patina of subdued greys and browns – a magical backdrop for the vibrant hues of the red geranium planted in the old enamel kettle. To most, the kettle seems nothing more a neglected antique laying in silent vigil on the front porch. But one could imagine that it once perched proudly on the cookstove, used to serve company on Sunday afternoons. It’s melodic whistle would be the start of some fantastic story.
And now it sits nobly, gracing the front porch, along with the jacket and rubber boots by the back door along with the old corn broom to let us know that there is still someone living there.
