TEMPLE GARDENS DANCE HALL –Circa 1948

Creating the painting “Temple Gardens Dance Hall – Circa 1948” was a challenge that only became possible with the assistance of many people and the Moose Jaw Public Library Archives.  The history of the Temple Gardens Dance Hall is filled with stories of events and people that spans over six decades.  As I worked on the painting, I felt that I was becoming part of a very important memory for the many that graced its wonderful dance floor.  I heard stories that could only be told by those lucky enough to have been part of this colourful era in Moose Jaw.

The handsome old dance hall of unique California architectural design was erected by Trudy and Cal Temple in 1921.  It became more that a dance hall—it became an institution.  It is a legend of its time—the tunes of the many orchestras, country or rock & roll bands echo in the hearts of countless patrons. Even after its demolition in the fall of 1978, patrons knew that the memories would linger on.  I hope that the creation of this painting will not only bring memories back, but bring them to life for the rest of us.
