Luna
With less than 1,000 breeding pairs left in Canada, the Burrowing Owl is an endangered species. Conservationists hope to stop the downward population trend through research, on the ground recovery efforts and public education. The Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre in Moose Jaw is the education leader in Canadian Burrowing Owl Recovery. With the Centre’s extensive program—Owls on Tour—staff members travel across Saskatchewan and deliver programming to 10,000 students and adults annually. A visit from the Centre would not be complete without the opportunity to meet a live Burrowing Owl.
Luna lived to be six years old, a typical life span, and through his life educated thousands of people about the plight of his species.
