Moose Jaw Capitol Theatre Circa 1930

In 1998, Moose Jaw’s Art in Motion group identified a need for a cultural centre in Moose Jaw’s vibrant mix of growing attractions, tourism and downtown revitalization projects.  By 1999, a feasibility study was approved and in 2000, the project was adopted and approved by City Council with an initial pledge of 3 million dollars.  AIM purchased the Capitol Theatre, as well as the properties both north and south of the theatre to be renovated as part of the complex.  Throughout the next two years, AIM raised 1.3 million dollars including a major contribution from Larry Wilson, a former resident and performer in the theatre.  Renovations began in January of 2003 with the doors opening in June, 2004, as the Mae Wilson Theatre in honour of the contribution from the Wilson Family.  Once again, the theatre is gracing the streetscape of Downtown Moose Jaw, and the headline on opening day echoed the Daily News of 1916 – “A Beautiful Theatre has opened”.
